The Romans invented many things. They are most famous for the arch. Ropes made in a number of different techniques could be made more or less elastic so they could use the rope for different tasks. A spring rope could be used for conserving energy. The more elastic ropes were used in catapults. Thicker ropes were used for building and use in pulleys. Pulleys were used to great advantage in order to gear force up or down. In order tp apply the most force, winches were placed horizontally or vertically. In the horizontal type they were put into action by turning the outward spokes of a horizontal wheel. Men or oxen could be used in turning the spokes. On the vertical wheel, it was mainly like a hamster wheel where men could keep walking on the inside
